About Me
My name is Pedro E. Cruz Carballo and I am an agronomist with a passion for sustainable agriculture. I was born and raised in rural Puerto Rico, where I developed a love for the land and a desire to make a positive impact on the environment.
I completed my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in agronomy at the University of Puerto Rico and during my studies, I became particularly interested in the role that small, sustainable farms play in promoting healthy ecosystems and supporting local communities. After completing my Master’s, I moved to Illinois to work as a grower of ornamental plants at a commercial scale and then moved to North Dakota to work as a soil conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS). I was promoted to district conservationist in Kansas and later moved to Mississippi to work as a horticulturist for the Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS).
During my career I contributed to several local conservation efforts to reduce soil erosion, increase water quality, improve nutrient management, and enhance biodiversity, soil health, and wildlife in agricultural ecosystems. In my free time, I also volunteered in community gardens that promoted small-scale farming and provided resources and support to small farmers. In 2022, I founded Agricultivity, a website dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture and supporting small urban farmers. Through Agricultivity, I have been able to share my passion for sustainable agriculture with a wider audience and help connect consumers with locally grown and produced food.
I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and am committed to continuing my work in the field of agronomy, with a focus on promoting urban and sustainable agriculture practices that benefit both people and the planet.
